Writing is truly a luxury. Not everyone has time to write. Not everyone from history to now, has had access to writing tools. And not everyone has the skills to write. Literacy recently expanded in the 19th century. Now, in the 21st century, the art of handwriting is being removed from US schools. What a loss for today’s youth!

If you can read and write, you are a part of a total 86.3% of the global literate. In order to take part in this free therapy, literacy is the first key. The second key is obtaining pen and paper, or whatever writing tools you prefer. Some have parchment journals, others scraps of unused bamboo paper, and yet others, art pads. Choose your medium, if you are so fortunate as well as the tools you prefer to mark with.

Writing, and drawing for that matter, involves all of you: your heart, your mind, and your body. The heart includes your soul and your spirit really is the essence of you. When you are pouring out onto the pages or stones, or clay pieces you have chosen to write on, you are truly expressing yourself. This expression causes you to reflect, reconsider, and refresh yourself in ways that non-expression does not reach.

The understanding, maturity, and redirection that comes from writing is unique to each individual. Since this activity does not come with a therapist’s bill, do it freely and as often as you feel led. Handwriting is beautiful and so is calligraphy, but if printing is all you are equipped with, use it.
