I've always been attracted to fonts, typefaces, & lettering. I bought books on typography, lettering, and collections of fonts. I couldn't get enough of the choices of colors, size, and fonts! And myriad of creative combinations one could make in pairing them together brought me delight.

Lets take a look at some of those options:

5 main font classifications:

  1. script or cursive

  2. decorative

  3. monospaced

  4. serif (letters with tails and line ridges)

  5. san-serif (clean letters without the extras)

7 ways to manipulate fonts:

  1. width / spacing between letters

  2. size of letters/ numbers

  3. pixel or point size of characters

  4. weight by thinness to thickness of characters

  5. strength of color to lighten or darken the letter

  6. height of each line of letters/numbers/symbols

  7. slant of the character in degrees line left to righ

things to remember when working with fonts

  1. make it legible to your reader

  2. use colors appropriate or topic

  3. pick no more than 3 fonts on a design page

  4. know when to choose contrasting or complimentary styles

  5. be consistent with your fonts & styles throughout your document
